Juno Calypso and Francesca Allen in conversation with Shoair Mavlian

Born in the digital age Millennials experience the world differently form any generation before them, communication is instant, personas are constructed both online and IRL, and photography is a central part of daily life. With these new parameters and experiences how do emerging photographers see the world, how do they document themselves and their generation, and how are they rewriting the boundaries of the representation of sex, gender and identity.

Juno Calypso

Photographer

Juno Calypso was born in East London in 1989. She completed her BA in photography at the London College of Communication in 2012, where she began her series of staged self-portraits. Since graduating, Juno has won several awards including the 2013 Catlin Art Prize and the 2016 British Journal of Photography International Award. Juno is currently one of the 2016 Foam Talents, and has been selected for several international photo festivals such as reGeneration3, Lianzhou Foto Festival, and Photo Vogue. Her video work has been screened at Photo London, Tate Modern, and Musée de l’Elysée. Juno lives and works in London.

Francesca Allen

Photographer

Francesca’s hedonistic work narrows in on ideas of youth, femininity, friendship and true love. Currently based in London, her work has been exhibited at galleries including The Photographer’s Gallery, Southbank Centre and The Serpentine, and nominated for awards by Magnum and Saatchi among others. 

Shoair Mavlian

Curator – Tate Modern

Shoair Mavlian is a curator at Tate Modern, London, focusing primarily on photography. Shoair researches acquisitions for the international collection whilst curating exhibitions and displays across Tate Modern. She curated the major exhibition The Radical Eye: Modernist Photography from the Sir Elton John Collection (Tate Modern, 2016), Conflict, Time, Photography (Tate Modern, 2014) and the collaborative exhibition Project Space: A Chronicle of Interventions (Tate Modern and TEOR/éTica, Costa Rica, 2014). Shoair has also worked on many of the photography displays of the permanent collection across Tate Modern including New Documentary Forms (2011), Lewis Baltz and Carl Andre (2012), Harry Callahan (2013), Charlotte Posenenske and Ursula Schulz-Dornburg (2014) and Close Up: Identity and the Photographic Portrait (2015). Her independent writing is regularly published in magazines and recent independent curatorial projects include the exhibition Don McCullin: Looking Beyond the Edge (Arles 2016) and In flux (Kanellopoulos Cultural Centre, Greece, 2015).

Shoair has a background in fine art photography practice and the history of photography focusing on the twentieth century. She has a strong interest in photography relating to conflict and memory, Central and Latin American photography and emerging contemporary practice.
