Simon Bainbridge

Simon Bainbridge is a writer and editor specialising in contemporary art and photography. He is a photography correspondent for The Art Newspaper, and contributes to magazines including Plaster and British Journal of Photography. He also runs the workshops, and consults with individual photographers and organisations.
He was Editor-in-Chief of British Journal of Photography, and Editorial Director of 1854 Media, during two decades in which he oversaw the transformation of the magazine, and introduced new initiatives such as Portrait of Britain (the UK’s largest public art project), the International Photography award, and its annual talent issue, Ones To Watch. He later worked for Magnum Photos as Head of Content, and for universities in the UK and Europe.
His first book, Magnum Artists, was published by Lawrence King in 2020, and he is the recipient of the RPS award for photography publishing. He has curated three exhibitions: Time & Motion Studies: New documentary photography beyond the decisive moment at Hereford Photography Festival; Paper, Rock, Scissors: The Constructed Image in New British Photography at Toronto’s Flash Forward festival; and Ones To Watch at Peckham 24. He has been a juror and/or nominator for dozens of photography awards.
